POOL ELECTRICAL
Many older pools still have the original galvanized steel electrical pipes feeding power to your pool equipment. In many cases, the pipes are rusted out leaving wires exposed to the elements causing an electrical hazard. Industry standards is scheduled 80 grey PVC pipe which does not corrode.
POOL PLUMBING
Many older pools have copper plumbing which was the Industry standard up until the mid 1970s. The standard now is scheduled 40 PVC pipe. The problem is Copper pipe wears out as water travels through it, eventually wearing the pipes thin which in turn leads to leaks.
Copper also leaves a blue/green residue on the surface of the pool making the Plaster look old and unattractive.
If your pool is over 40 years old, Re-plumbing is definitely an option to consider.
POOL LIGHTS
One of the biggest hazards in a pool is the pool light. Prior to 1970, pools were built with the junction box of the pool light in the deck right next to the pool. Deck mounted pool light junction boxes are extremely dangerous, leading to many deaths across the country each year. Deck mounted junction boxes can fill up with water and when the light is powered on, it electrifies the water in the pool.
The Code now dictates all pool light junction boxes have to be at a minimum distance of 5 feet from the edge of the pool and 10 feet above the water (no chance of filling with water), as well as installing a GFCI protection device, thus eliminating all chances of electrifying the pool water.
If you have a deck mounted pool light junction box, this is a real hazard that should be corrected immediately.
POOL CRACK REPAIR
Over the last five years, we have experienced an epidemic of pools cracking. We have repaired hundreds of cracks in pools with great success with our proprietary method of crack repair. There are many methods of fixing cracks but we believe our method to be superior to all other ones:
Epoxy Injection: Probably the least effective method of crack repair (filling the crack with Epoxy – glue).
Staples and torque locks (drilling a hole on each side of the crack and inserting a horse shoe shape piece of Rebar over the crack and cementing over it. (Also, not an effective method).
At Gold Coast Pool each and every crack is assessed to formulate the best chance for success. In most situations, we will open the wall of the pool at least 6 inches on each side of the crack and chase the crack until it has been completely removed and there is no evidence of failure to the gunite.
We go all the way through the gunite to the dirt underneath. Only then, can you evaluate the failure.
What we usually find is that the pool has been leaking for much longer than the customer even realizes. We often discover that there is quite often significant damage to the structural steel inside the wall of the pool. Often times the rebar is rusted completely through and broken or even in some cases missing altogether.
Once the crack has been opened up and evaluated, we then build a new structural steel cage inside the exposed area and then refill the void with 6000 PSI concrete (up to twice as strong as the original gunite). While there is no guarantee that your pool will not crack again due to significant ground movement, we have never had a pool crack in the same place that we have made repairs to.
